Issues & Solutions

(a) Issues

  • The flow of water in the Gomti River is steadily getting depleted.
  • There are total 37 Nalas draining into the Gomti River from Sitapur Bypass upto Shaheed Path. The peak discharge of nalas draining from Right side (sis Gomti) is 660 mld and peak discharge of nalas draining from Left side (trans Gomti) side is 513 mld. Jal Nigam and Nagar Nigam can only handle 401 mld sewage water coming from above nalas. Rest of the sewage water directly flows into the Gomti River.
  • The dissolved oxygen content in the river water before it enters the city is 10 mg/litre and it is reduced to 2 mg/litre by the time it emerges out of the city. Aquatic life cannot survive in this water.
  • Since the River is not channelized, the spread of water is very wide and therefore there is high evaporation of the river water.
  • Land on both sides of the river is not being utilized properly and illegal occupation is on the rise.

(b) Solutions

  • To channelize the Gomti River in Lucknow as per international standards.
  • To handle the first storm of rainy season which carries the maximum polluted water, trunk sewage drains on both side of the Gomti River has to be constructed. Left Side (trans Gomti) trunk drain of capacity of 09 cumec and Right side (sis Gomti) side trunk drain of capacity of 11.5 cumec is proposed to be constructed.
  • To increase the sewage treating capacity Jal Nigam/Nagar Nigam has prepared the project and has submitted to the Government for approval.
  • To provide additional water into the River and thus bring about improvement in the future drinking water situation and environment of Lucknow city.
  • To improve the traffic movement by constructing roads on both sides of the Gomti River.
  • To develop the Riverfront by developing green belt on the banks of the River, under which facilities like cycle track, walking track, water sports facilities, water transport and tourism activities can be promoted.
  • To provide additional water in the Gomti by the Mahdoiya and Ataria escape of the Sharda Canal System.
  • To provide water for regeneration of the River by reviving about 27 lakes and ponds in Pilibhit, Hardoi, Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri districts.

(c) Provisions of the Project

  • Capacity regeneration of Ataria and Mahdoiya Escapes of the Sharda Canal System to make available as much additional water as possible at Gaughat.
  • Constuction of a temporary embankment upstream of Pucca Pul.
  • Cleaning by dredging of sludge brought into the Gomti River by drains.
  • Channelizing of the River by constructing diaphragm wall/pitching on 8.1 Km. on both sides of the River from Pucca Pul to Gomti Weir.
  • Construction of intercepting drains on both sides of the River to prevent the direct flow of polluted water into the Gomti River.
  • To develop the Riverfront by developing green belt on the banks of the River as per international standards, under which cycle track, walking track, water sports facilities, water transport and tourism activities can be promoted.
  • Proper illumination of all the structures along both the banks, in the proposed part of Gomti River.
  • Integrated development & beautification on the land to be reclaimed.
